Disposal and Recycling
AES currently owns and operates two hazardous waste landfills in Angola, comprising a total of 25 engineered disposal cells. A third hazardous waste landfill is under development in Bengo Province and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
All AES landfills are strictly dedicated to the final disposal of waste that has been previously treated at AES facilities. This controlled approach ensures full traceability and compliance, as no untreated or third‑party waste is accepted directly into disposal cells.
AES landfills are designed and built according to Angolan and South African requirements and are divided into four main classes of cells, i.e.:
- Class 1 – Cells for Hazardous Waste (Incineration)
- Class 2 – Cells for Solids with TPH < 1% (TDU)
- Class 3 – Evaporation Pond
- Class 4 – Domestic Waste Cells
AES aims to reduce the volume of waste disposed of in landfills to less than 30% of total received waste by 2030, prioritizing recycling, waste recovery, and value‑creation solutions in line with circular economy principles.
